Behavioral Health

 
Behavioral Health is a broad term that includes both mental health and substance abuse;  two issues that continue to increase across the nation. Often they occur in tandem, with higher rates of substance abuse being seen in those experiencing mental illness which can further exacerbate a condition.

The US Healthy People 2020 high school adolescent suicide attempts target was 1.0% or less.  WCSD high school students reporting having attempted suicide during the 12 months before the YRBS (Youth Risk Behavior Survey) increased in 2019 and again in 2021.  While WCSD middle school students reporting actually trying to kill themselves continued to decrease.  The Healthy People 2030 target is 1.8 suicide attempts per 100 population of students in grades 9 through 12, in the past 12 months.
