Why is this important?

Domestic violence is a learned behavior that uses fear and a form of oppression that foster violence and the abuse of power over other people.  Victims of domestic violence cross racial and ethnic, socio-economic and gender lines.  Domestic violence can be prevented and costs to society include emergency shelter and housing, healthcare, survivor assistance, approximately one-third of all police response time, millions of dollars of paid workdays lost annually.
