Percentage of Seniors Self-reporting Food Insecurity Cost Issues

This indicator suggests the percentage of Washoe County seniors 55 years or older agreement to survey questions concerning food insecurity.  This data was gathered via The HELLO Project survey in partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno.  NOTE:  this survey data is limited and not representative of all seniors 55 years or older in Washoe County, thus, it should not be extrapolated to the senior population or compared to other Washoe County senior data sources.

Survey limitations include a self-selection, non-probability sampling technique in partnership with community organizations that invited seniors utilizing their services to participate in the survey during the COVID-19 pandemic but did not give all Washoe County seniors the chance to participate. Consequently, the survey distribution is unknown and the response rate could not be calculated.  Data from both online and paper survey responses were collected between October 2020 and March 2021, and again between October 2021 and January 2022, were merged by the Nevada Center for Survey, Evaluation and Statistics (NCSES) resulting in N = 139 complete and valid survey responses (lived in Washoe County and completed most questions) included in NCSES’ final report (some participants did skip questions) out of a total 179 respondents. For more information, please see the The HELLO Project final report.

Why is this important?

The HELLO Project survey includes items on loneliness, depression, social connection, mental and physical health which collectively relate to barriers that can impact mental and physical health outcomes and quality of life among seniors.  Reducing senior health disparities, strengthening community connections, social support and engagement, as well as access to resources, affords opportunities that further improve overall community health.
