Mortality Rate Among Children: 0-19 Years

County: Washoe
Measurement Period: 2021

Mortality rate (crude) among children 0-19 years of age per 100,000 population.

Why is this important?

The health and wellbeing of children reflect not only the current health status of a community and the nation, but the health of future.  Childhood mortality is influenced by poor health at birth (largely influenced by socioeconomic status and not simply genetic traits) and associated health effects including the reduction in the child’s ability to learn, lower rates of high school graduation, and higher rates of hospitalizations.  By fostering a healthy and safe environment, children will have a better chance for success and living a healthy life as they develop.

The leading causes of death among children are perinatal conditions, unintentional injuries, congenital defects and chromosomal abnormalities, suicide, homicide, and cancers.
