Why is this important?
Regular and timely screenings for cervical cancer (recommended starting at 21 through age 65), including Pap tests to detect precancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix before they become invasive cancer, are designed to catch the disease in an early stage. Cervical cancer is slow growing and when caught in early stages, may be halted or even fully reversed with treatment. If left undiagnosed and untreated, cancer is able to spread to other areas of the body often resulting in a more complex, expensive, and difficult recovery. Human papilloma virus (HPV) is sexually transmitted and the main cause of cervical cancer. The number of new cases of cancer and many deaths due to cancer can be reduced with timely cancer screenings or tests.
