Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) Trends

Measurement Period: 2021-2022

Influenza-like illness (ILI) percentage calculated from weekly reports by Washoe County sentinel providers.

Note that the case definition of influenza-like illness (ILI) was changed with the 2021-22 flu season to a fever (≥ 100°F [37.8°C]) and cough and/or sore throat.  Previously it was defined as a fever > 100° F and a cough and/or sore throat, in the absence of a known cause other than influenza.

Why is this important?

Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications particularly in older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions.  Symptoms range from mild to severe, and in some cases may result in hospitalization or death.  It can lead to pneumonia and can be dangerous for people with heart or breathing conditions.  Obtaining a seasonal flu shot is recommended for all persons 6 months and older, with focus on persons considered to be high-risk, and persons who work with vulnerable high-risk population.
